Louisiana Capitol Coaches Living The "Real Deal" - High School Sports
In today's big business world of athletics it is easy to forget the purest form of American sports - the high school game. It's at the high school level of athletics, which is so often forgotten in today's media, that many young people, both boys and girls benefit from competition and the triumph of high achievement and personal growth. High school athletics provides many young people with their first opportunity to learn teamwork, to develop a positive work ethic, and to work with coaches and mentors toward specific goals. While the practice and playtime on the courts, diamonds, and fields of high school sports are short, the memories forged during these formative years of young athletes' lives last a lifetime.
No one knows these time-tested and true life lessons better than Coach Barrett Murphy and Coach Fred Allen of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who for four generations have coached, taught, and helped young people to be successful through the conduit of high school sports. Coach Murphy and Coach Allen consider high school athletics the "REAL DEAL" because "It's what truly makes a difference in so many young people's lives." Coach Murphy and Coach Allen have appropriately named their series of weekly radio programs on Friday, Saturday and Sundays on local Clear Channel radio stations, WJBO, WSKR and ESPN Radio, "THE REAL DEAL High School Sports Talk."
Coach Barrett Murphy coached for thirty-plus years in the Baton Rouge school system, college and indoor professional football and Coach Fred Allen served as the former athletic director at Angola State Penitentiary for twenty-plus years. Allen now teaches Physical Education in the East Baton Rouge Public School System, while Coach Murphy is fully retired from coaching, yet he remains active in the Baton Rouge sports community. The duo, have been friends for years prior to working together on "THE REAL DEAL High School Sports Talk" show. Coach Murphy created the show in 1996 and invited Coach Allen to join him on board in 1997. They both feel that it is now time to take "REAL DEAL" to the rest of the country.
"It's time to take it to the next level," says Coach Barrett Murphy who badly wants to preserve the true role of high school athletics in society. "Professional and college sports have encroached on the fan base for high school sports in recent years. The advent of Thursday and Friday night games have cut into the high school sports' fan base, and we need to continue to cover and promote high school athletics. In doing so we herald the unsung accomplishments of the young athletes that make high school athletics the special, home-spun American experience that it is." Coach added, "The deal is the "REAL DEAL," and the "REAL DEAL" IS HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS!"
